Nope, not today: This shirt makes me think of Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks. Haven't heard of Claudette Colvin? She was the 15-year-old who was arrested nine months before Rosa Parks' for refusing to give up her bus seat. But she was pregnant and deemed an inappropriate symbol for the cause. So, no protest. Sighing. Judgments all around even in times of strife.
Rosa Parks' arrest led to the Montgomery bus boycott in which over 40,000 black bus riders refused to ride the bus. This lasted for 381 days. It ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses is unconstitutional a huge moment for blacks.
While there is no evidence that Claudette or Rosa ever said nope, not today I can imagine that they at least thought it. Why? Because nope, not today is more than an attitude. It is a way of life. It tells people that today is not the day for foolishness.
Who in your life exemplifies nope, not today? Is it your grandmother? Grandfather? Mother? Father? Aunt? Sister? Brother? Teacher? Or someone else? How do they do it? What is your nope, not today moment? How do you display it? Let us know so that your story may inspire more of us to live our lives that way and of course, get the shirt! Order your shirt
Feeling blacknificient: This shirt evokes unabashed power, strength, and beauty. And when I think of all those things a couple people come to mind. One is Cicely Tyson. She has a successful career by carefully choosing roles that exemplified quality and depth. She has won accolades and awards for her performances on TV, stage, and in film. In my mind, she is the epitome of black girl (woman) magic which translates into felling blacknificient.
The next person who comes to mind is my friend Lisa Nelson a retired surgeon. She is not only intelligent and gorgeous she is an activist, cyclist, diver, grandmother extraordinaire, brazenly black, too many other things to list. She is the challenger of all things status quo and dares you to do the same. She is unfazed by almost everything. And she accepts nothing less than excellence in her life. Listen to her on her podcast Justice Journey One Million Voices on Anchor.
